How are cable lugs fitted correctly?
The professional installation of cable lugs is crucial for a secure and conductive connection. The assembly process involves several steps and should be carried out using suitable tools - in particular a suitable crimping tool that is matched to the respective cable lug type and cross-section.
Preparing the conductor
First, the insulation of the cable is removed to the required length - usually about as long as the insertion area of the cable lug. Care must be taken to ensure that the strands are not damaged or cut off.
Inserting the conductor
The stripped wire is pushed completely into the shaft of the cable lug until the copper conductor is visible at the end (for open versions). With insulated cable lugs, the insertion depth is limited by the insulating sleeve.
Crimping with crimping pliers
The most important step is crimping - the mechanical crimping of the conductor and cable lug. Special crimping tools are used for this, which, depending on the design, create a gas-tight connection. For industrial applications, crimping pliers with color-coded inserts or crimping jaws should be used to apply the standardized pressure precisely to the cable lug.
Checking the connection
After crimping, the hold must be checked: The cable must no longer be able to be pulled out of the cable lug. A visual check also ensures that no strands are protruding and that the insulation has not been damaged.
For uninsulated cable lugs, an additional shrink sleeve can be pulled over the connection to ensure mechanical protection and better insulation - especially for outdoor applications or in damp environments.
