Technical properties of the MC4 connector

Solar connectors are characterized by precise workmanship, high-quality materials and clear technical specifications that ensure a secure connection in solar systems.

Assembly and processing of MC4 connectors

The correct installation of plugs for photovoltaic systems is crucial for a secure, long-lasting connection. With the right tools, plugs and sockets are easy to install.

This is how you proceed:

1
Strip the cable: Strip the insulation to the length specified by the manufacturer. Use special stripping pliers to ensure that none of the fine copper strands are damaged or cut off.

Crimping the contact: Place the open metal crimp contact (pin or socket) in the appropriate receptacle of a pair of crimping pliers (not standard combination pliers!). Insert the stripped cable end and press the pliers fully together until the automatic release triggers. The result must be a gas-tight connection without protruding strands.

Lock the contact in the housing: Push the fully crimped contact into the plug or socket housing from behind until you hear a clear "click". Pull lightly on the cable to check that the contact has latched securely into the housing.

Tighten the cable gland: Tighten the rear union nut (cable gland). Ideally, use MC4 assembly wrenches to hold the housing in place. This ensures strain relief and squeezes the internal seal so that the system is watertight (IP65/68).

Testing & connection: Before plugging together, be sure to check the polarity with a multimeter. Connect the plug and socket until the snap-in mechanism locks. When laying the cable, ensure that it is UV-resistant, avoid tight bending radii and make sure that the plug is not in standing water (e.g. in the gutter).
Please note:
  • Only use original Stäubli MC4 or compatible connectors for maximum safety.
  • Ensure the correct conductor cross-section (4 mm² or 6 mm²) and the rated current.
  • Calibrate crimping tools regularly to ensure reliable plug connections.

How do you recognize the right plug for your solar cable?
Cable cross-section, conductor type (flexible or rigid) and polarity are important. Check the manufacturer's specifications to see whether 4 mm² or 6 mm² cables are supported. Pay attention to the IP protection class, snap-in system and compatibility with the PV modules and sockets used.
Are MC4 plugs compatible with all solar modules?
MC4 connectors are compatible with most commercially available solar modules as long as the conductor cross-section and polarity are correct. For special modules or manufacturers, there are MC4-compatible variants that are also IP65/IP68-compliant.
What tools do I need to install solar connectors?
Crimping pliers (suitable for contact and cable), wire strippers, unlocking tool and torque wrench for cable gland are required. The wrong tools will lead to unreliable connections. We also recommend sets with a test pin for measuring resistance.
What should I do with defective MC4 connectors?
If the MC4 connectors are defective, you should disconnect the connection from the solar system immediately to avoid short circuits or malfunctions. Check whether the housing, the crimp contact or the seal is damaged. Defective plugs should not be repaired, but replaced with new plugs. Ensure that the cables are correctly secured, crimp contacts are fitted using suitable crimping pliers and the plug connection is reliably locked again. This will restore a secure and long-lasting PV connection.
